Donate today to help kids like Belle stay brave and strong in hospital. Belle arrived at Queensland Children’s Hospital with injuries that would be traumatic for an adult – let alone an eight-year-old. It took multiple surgeries and weeks and weeks in hospital before Belle could walk or eat solid food again. No child should have to go through what Belle did. But if they do, your donations help bring little patients and their worried families the support they need to stay strong. This support isn’t just a ‘nice to have’. It’s vital to keep families resilient through trauma and getting children back to healthy childhoods. Please donate today. Your donation will work wonders for kids like Belle. Thankfully she was wearing a helmet, so her head was protected, but she suffered a shattered pelvis, broken jaw and internal bleeding caused by multiple breaks. Her mum Jess will never forget seeing her little girl so badly broken. “I’d never, ever been so terrified. We just didn’t know if she was going to be OK.” Belle spent six weeks in Queensland Children’s Hospital being treated for her extensive injuries. She bravely endured five major operations, a dangerous infection and the loneliness of being away from home and family. She required strong pain relief to keep her comfortable. Belle struggled, but at a truly awful time, services funded by people like you made a huge difference to Belle and her family. Those services include a big library of toys and books at the hospital, an exciting play area called Kidzone, music therapy, and many activities designed to support kids’ wellbeing. Those activities include Juiced TV, the TV show made by the kids in hospital, for the kids in hospital. Jess remembers how powerful those things were. “Belle really looked forward to going down to Kidzone to play, and the best thing was that Kidzone also welcomed her sisters and brother. For them to be able to have some time together was just so amazing.” Belle will return to hospital later this year for another surgery to remove the metal plate from her jaw. She’s not looking forward to being away from home, but she knows there’ll be nice things about hospital too – and that people like you will help look after her. “We’ve nicknamed her Belle the Brave. For a kid to have been through so much and be able to bounce back the way she has, it’s just incredible. I don’t know where she got the bravery, but she inspires me.” Patient and Family Services Our patient and family support team have been improving the hospital experience for sick kids and their families for more than 30 years, helping them to cope during an emotional and at times uncertain journey. With your generous assistance, we support and deliver essential services at Queensland Children’s Hospital, and regional hospitals across the state. Play is such an important aspect of a child’s life, so we want to make sure that even though they are in hospital, children have an opportunity to smile, laugh and just be kids. From art and craft packs, toys, and game loans to the amazing Kidzone playroom, your support helps sick children and their siblings. But it’s not just the kids, we are here for the whole family. Your generosity provides operating theatre and emergency department support, bereavement support, wayfinding, special cuddles and bedside play. It provides free meals in partnership with the Scarlett May Foundation, ward orientation and the Family Resource Centre to help make hospital an easier place to be. “The services provided by the Foundation were such a light in her day. They gave her a break from the boredom of hospital and moments where she could smile. And it helped us as parents to see that smile back on her face.” – Jess, Belle’s mum Frequently Asked Questions What will my donation be used for?
