Declan’s story

At just four weeks old weight loss and a 'smokers cough' prompted a visit to the doctors and an x-ray revealed Declan had cystic fibrosis.

At just four weeks old, Declan had what his Mum Sharyn described as “a smokers cough”.  This along with weight loss, prompted Sharyn to take Declan to the doctors, where an x-ray revealed a collapsed lung. Further tests revealed Declan had cystic fibrosis.

Now fifteen, Declan has been a frequent flyer to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, where he has had regular “tune-ups”.

In January 2015 he had a portacath inserted to facilitate easier access for bloods and IV treatment due to his non-functioning veins. Declan had another stay in hospital earlier this year, plus HITH (hospital in the home). This will be an ongoing battle for Declan as he gets older.

Declan is a regular star of Juiced TV – the tv show made by the kids in hospital, for the kids in hospital.

Declan loves marine animals and wants to be a marine biologist when he gets older.

Declan is one of 20 ambassadors for the Woolworths Regional Wall Tokens campaign.

By purchasing a $2 wall token from now until the end of September, you are helping fund equipment and programs in your local hospital, which help families like Declan’s through an emotional, stressful, and at times uncertain journey.

Woolworths Regional Wall Tokens is an opportunity to highlight some of the brave kids throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales, who you can help by purchasing a wall token.
