Queensland Police officers ready to run 160km in 24 hours for sick kids

Three determined police officers are just a few days out from a mammoth effort to run 160km in 24 hours to raise much-needed funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Balancing shift work with family life, 2:00am training sessions have become the norm for Petrie Police Station Senior Constable Dane Britton, Senior Constable Ryan Cole of Caboolture Child Protection Investigation Unit, and Senior Constable Matt Powell of Fortitude Valley Bike Squad, who will complete the aptly named Not A Fun Run on September 12 at the Brisbane Valley Run Trail.

The officers’ quest was borne of a deeply personal experience, after Sen-Constable Britton’s nephew, Logan, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at only seven-years-old.

Against all odds, Logan was the first child in Australia of his age to survive the disease, and so Sen-Constable Britton wanted to say thank you to Children’s Hospital Foundation for all they did for Logan during his time in hospital.

The officers are aiming to raise $15,000 in the lead-up to the run, having already raised more than $13,000.

“Supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation makes the hard work worth it, giving us an opportunity to positively engage our community, and leaving a lasting positive impact on those who need it most,” Sen-Constable Britton said.

“I never knew how to repay them for all the amazing things they did for Logan during the fight for his life and running 160km seemed like a crazy enough way to say thank you.”

The much-needed funds raised by Dane and his running mates will help the Children’s Hospital Foundation work wonders for Queensland’s sickest kids, through delivering entertainment and distraction for kids in hospital, investing in vital medical research, and funding new life-saving equipment.

Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO, Rosie Simpson, has commended the officers for their incredible support.

“What these police officers are undertaking is a tremendous effort to help improve the lives of Queensland’s sickest kids, and we feel incredibly privileged that they chose to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation,” Ms Simpson said.

“We simply couldn’t do what we do without the support of people like Dane, Matt, and Ryan, I implore Queenslanders to get behind their cause and help motivate them to give this extraordinary fun run all they’ve got.”
