The first two minutes of Zachary’s life involved struggling to breathe.
Zachary was stabilized and sent home with his parents. Then, just 11 weeks later, Zac was rushed to our children’s hospital where he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition.
Zachary underwent two open-heart surgeries before he was even three months old, and a third surgery when he was 10 months old. Further complications lead to an autoimmune system disease, which affects his ability to fight off infections and ability to process food.
“We are so blessed to have the best care with our cardiologist, surgeons, heartkids and the staff in the ICU and cardiac ward. If it wasn’t for them, last year could have been very different for us.”
Zac has now built up the strength to learn to crawl and walk – you wouldn’t know this active toddler has been through so much already.
“Before Zac was diagnosed, we had no idea about what it was like for parents and kids who live in hospital – we are always trying to raise awareness for kids with heart conditions.”
