Meet our Bridge to Brisbane ambassadors, Jazmyne and Jo

Jazmyne and Jo are both friends and patients of the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. They are both united by their everyday experiences living with burns. They met at Camp Oz, an initiative of the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital burns unit and funded by the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Camp Oz helps patients like Jazmyne and Jo have fun with other kids who also have burns injuries, helping them to cope with their trauma and build their confidence. This year they are bravely joining the Children’s Hospital Foundation to run in the 2016 Bridge to Brisbane – and they’d like to run alongside you!

Jazmyne’s story

Jazmyne’s life changed forever on a family holiday when she was two years old after an accident in the kitchen. In a blink of an eye, Jazmyne accidentally bumped a fry pan of boiling water, pouring it down her face, neck, shoulders and back. She spent six weeks in hospital enduring multiple surgeries for skin grafting and weeks of rehabilitation, physiotherapy and pain management. Jazmyne is now 13 years old and still receives treatment for her burns as she grows including skin grafting and scar management.

Jo’s story

Seven-year-old Jo was playing at a family friend’s property, unaware she was close to a large ash pit where a burn off had happened the previous day. She accidentally fell onto the ash pit, burning her foot through to nerve endings in her ankle. She was treated at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where she received a skin graft to help reduce scarring. She also wore a pressure sock 24 hours a day for a year after her accident.
